The city of Spokane has a rich history, dating back to its creation in 1871. Over the course of time, it has seen many highs and lows yet it has never lost its focus on perfection which is why its motto reads: ‘Near nature. Near Perfect’. Gonzaga University has been a part of the rich and proud history of Spokane as it was raised only a decade after the founding of the city. Perfection has come naturally for the Bulldogs who have fielded varsity teams in 16 different disciplines and have made a name for themselves for excellence and perseverance. Every season brings a chance to the fans to support the proud Bulldogs by buying Gonzaga Bulldogs tickets and they do it excitedly.
It was the vision and dedication of a priest from Sicily that the university was erected in 1887 in the newly created city of Spokane in Washington. Over the years, the university varsity teams went through a maturation phase where they picked up many nicknames. Some of them stuck with them, such as the Fighting Irish which they were called during the decade from 1910-20. However, eventually it was replaced in favor of the Bulldogs which went more in line with the tenacity and determination of the Gonzaga varsities. However, to some fans the nickname ‘Zags’ which is short for Gonzaga seemed fit. No matter which nickname became popular, it was Gonzaga’s play that mattered the most. Over the years they became famous for their gritty style of play and never-say-die attitude which is what attracts hoards of fans to watch them play every season.
The Bulldogs take part in the West Coast Conference of the NCAA I where they play in 16 disciplines. A surprising fact about the Bulldogs is that they are the only member of the Big Sky Conference which does not have a football team. Gonzaga had a very good football program which had fielded great teams up till 1941. The football program discontinued due to WWII. One of the most famous alumni who played on the Bulldogs football team was the legendary Hall of Famer Tony Canadeo who later went on to play for the Green Bay Packers before retiring.
Over the years, the basketball team of the Bulldogs has made a reputation as a title favorite. It was validated when the rankings came out in 2012-13 with Bulldogs at number 1. This success has come at the heels of strong performances which include a winning streak of 38 games that started with their first game in their legendary home court the McCarthy Athletic Centre in 2004. Over the years, some legendary players who have gone on to make a name for themselves in the NBA have played on the Bulldogs team. One of the most famous is John Stockton. Bulldogs boasts of a talented squad that comes out to give its best every season, making Gonzaga Bulldogs tickets a revered sports commodity.
