The history of the franchise goes all the back to 1971 when the team was founded as the Shreveport Captains in the Shreveport, Louisiana. For its 2002 season, the name of the team was temporarily changed to Shreveport SwampDragons, after which the team was relocated to Frisco, Texas. The team changed both its city of operations and the ownership as well when it was bought by Mandalay Entertainment back in 2003.
Playing as the Class AA affiliate of Major League Baseball’s Texas Rangers, the team’s home games are currently hosted at the Dr. Pepper Ballpark. With seating capacity of 10,316, the stadium attracts a large number of Roughriders fans each year when the season is in full swing. Due to its high attendance records and gross revenues each year, Roughriders were the fourth most valuable minor league franchise in 2012.
The team’s joint ownership contract between Mandalay Entertainment and Southwest Sports Group was signed in 2001 after which construction of a new purpose-built ballpark began in 2002. The arena was scheduled to be fully operational by the team’s 2003 season. Also in 2002, Roughriders’ affiliation with the Texas Rangers was announced. After the team’s move to Frisco, it enjoyed a warm welcome in the form of a sold out season opening game. In their inaugural game, Frisco Roughriders attracted a total of 10,000 fans, hence packing the stadium. Also in 2003, Dr. Pepper Ballpark was named the Best New Ballpark by Baseballparks.com. In their first season, Roughriders made their very first league championship appearance, where the team lost to San Antonio Missions. They were able to set attendance records which went a long way in ensuring the team’s bright future.
In 2004 the team won its very first Texas League Championship, to become one of the teams to beat in the league. Apart from that 2004 league championship, they have also claimed another four division titles, the most recent of which came in 2012.
