A Look Back
It was in the year 2015 that rumors first began to surface about a new soccer club based in Cincinnati was about to join the United Soccer League. The news was being reported by different news media outlets and with time the speculation kept mounting. A lot of that speculation centered on the kind of relationship the new soccer side would have with the Cincinnati Kings, a now defunct soccer club, and the Cincinnati Bengals. That discussion had some merit too because Jeff Berding was a member of the ownership group that was trying to get a new soccer club for Cincinnati. Since Berding was an employee of the Cincinnati Bengals, there were a lot of things that needed to be clarified.
It was also reported that the Linder Family, that own the "American Financial Group" was behind the new franchise. Finally on August 12, 2015, it was announced that John Harkes will be the team's new head coach. It was also announced that FC Cincinnati will be playing their home games at the Nippert Stadium.
The FC Cincinnati Begin to Play
FC Cincinnati played their first ever game on March 26, 2016 against the Charleston Battery but lost 1-0. They however did not have to wait too long to claim their first triumph as they defeated Bethlehem Steel FC 2-1 in their second game. They made their home debut on April 9, 2016 and won the clash against Charlotte Independence 2-1. They posted a 16-6-8 record that year and went to the conference quarterfinals and to the third round of the US Cup.
The FC Cincinnati also broke the league's attendance record for a regular season game on multiple occasions. On April 16, 2016, a record 20,497 fans turned up to watch them against Louisville City FC. FC Cincinnati won the game 2-1. They broke the record on May 14, 2016 when they beat the Pittsburgh Riverhounds 1-0 in front of 23,375 fans. Then on September 17, 2016, 24,376 fans turned up to watch them play, thus setting a new regular season attendance record. FC Cincinnati were up against the Orlando City B team and the former won the clash 1-0.
The 2017 campaign was also a memorable one for FC Cincinnati. They posted a 12-10-10 record and reached the conference quarterfinals for the second straight season. The highlight of the campaign however was their run to the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup.
They beat five teams to reach the last four of the competition. Two of those triumphs were recorded against MLS teams, the Chicago Fire and the Columbus Crew. In the semifinals, they came up short against the New York Red Bulls. It marked the first time since 2009 that a lower division side had made it to the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup.
FC Cincinnati's clash against the Red Bulls is the second most watched game in the U.S. Open Cup history while their game against the Chicago Fire is third on the very same list.
The MLS Bid
Negotiations with Major League Soccer over the prospect of an expansion side began in the early part of 2016. It was then announced that the city of Cincinnati is in the running for an expansion side that was to increase the number of teams from twenty five to twenty eight. A formal bid was submitted in January of 2017 and on May 29, 2018, it was announced that FC Cincinnati would join the MLS as an expansion team in the year 2019. They are also constructing a new stadium which is slated to be completed in the year 2021.
Things are looking up and FC Cincinnati tickets 2018 are in demand. It promises to be cracking few years for this soccer side and you can be a part of the ride by booking your FC Cincinnati tickets at the earliest.
