The International Champions Cup (ICC)
Another summer is here and the US will again play host to some of the biggest soccer clubs from Europe. Scintillating encounters can be expected between the likes of Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool among others. Various cities will host the games including Kansas City, Charlotte, Houston, Arlington and Santa Clara among others.
The just concluded club soccer campaign in Europe gave fans plenty of drama, thrill, excitement, fun and heartbreak. All the teams will now be looking to prepare for the new season in the best way possible. Building up the form and fitness of the players will be the most important thing during these summer months.
The Pride of Germany
By far the biggest and most prestigious soccer club in Germany, Bayern Munich are also one of the most popular teams in the world with a huge fan base. The club was established back in 1900 by a bunch of soccer players. The initial years and decades were relatively barren as the team looked to assert itself within the German game.
While Bayern routinely got the better of their local rivals and won a few regional trophies during this time, they had to wait until 1932 for their first national championship win. The German Bundesliga was formed in 1963 and the Bavarians were not among the sides initially picked to be a part of it.
However, it was not long before the club entered one of the most successful periods in its history. After gaining promotion to the Bundesliga in 1965, Bayern finished third in the league in their debut campaign and went all the way in the DFB-Pokal.
The Best Years
A third place finish in the German top flight in 1965-66 was enough to earn qualification for the European Cup Winners’ Cup the following season. They went on to lift the title after a dramatic win against Scottish side Rangers in the final. This was the beginning of arguably the most successful period in the club’s history.
In 1969, Bayern won their maiden Bundesliga title and also took home the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) to register the first ever league and cup double since the inception of the German Bundesliga. To date, only 3 others clubs have managed to achieve this feat. These include Werder Bremen, Borussia Dortmund and FC Cologne.
With the likes of legendary captain Franz Beckenbauer along with striker Gerd Muller and goalkeeper Sepp Maier in the side, Bayern embarked on a period of dominance both at home and in Europe. The trophy-laden early 1970s began with the club’s second Bundesliga title in 1972. Two more league triumphs followed in 1973 and 1974.
However, their finest hour was still to come. The Bavarians’ third straight league title was followed by a maiden European Cup win the same year. Facing Atletico Madrid in the final, Beckenbauer and co. ran riot (played in a replay after the earlier game was drawn) to win 4-0.
After this spectacular victory, Bayern would successfully defend their continental title for the next two years to make it three wins in a row. While domestic success eluded them during this golden period in Europe, the Bavarians cemented their status as one of the continent’s elite clubs. In the process, they became only the third side to win the European Cup for three consecutive years.
Perennial Dominance
Over the years and decades, Bayern have been regular winners of both the German Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal. They are the most successful soccer club in the land by a long way. In total, the Bavarians have won 5 European Cups, 29 German Bundesliga titles, 19 German Cups, 6 German League Cups and 7 German Super Cups among other honors.
They have already strengthened their current squad with the signing of French left-back Lucas Hernandez from Atletico Madrid. The US tour will be a good opportunity to prepare well for the new season. Get your International Champions Cup – FC Bayern Munich tickets now.
