About Errol Spence Jr.
Spence’s amateur career began in early 2009 with a series of U.S National Golden Gloves wins. Later in the year, he won three consecutive national amateur welterweights championships. By 2012, Spence had qualified to the 2011 World Championships and qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. He turned professional shortly afterwards.
His pro debut was a four round bout against Jonathan Garcia. They faced off at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. The game did not go beyond the third round as Spence knocked Garcia down and out by then. He followed suit in his next game, 2012’s face off against Richard Andrews at Los Angeles’ Sports Arena. Spence won the game after knocking out Andrews. In all, by the end of 2013, Spence had won ten professional fights, eight of which were knockouts.
In 2014, the boxer made his television debut on Showtime in a ten round fight against Ronal Cruz at the Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas. This was a highly pressured job for a first timer but Spence made his win seem effortless.
The IBF Welterweight Championship
2017 marked a great year for the boxer’s career as it began with a fight against then welterweight champion, Kell Brook. The fight took place in front of 27000 fans on May 27 in Sheffield. Spence immediately dominated Brook in the 11-round fight by landing power shots. In round 10, he compelled Brook to take a knee; which he did in round 11 as well. The judges all gave a high score to Spence and he won the game, although he feels he did not perform to his best capability. Errol Spence Jr. had been crowned the IBF Welterweight Champion after this fight.
Spence vs. Peterson

After much negotiation and speculation, the fight has been finalized for the 20th of January 2018 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Spence would have just turned 28 years old (on January 13th) and this is a big fight for him. In a presser, Spence mentioned; “(Peterson’s) somebody I looked up to in the amateurs and I learned a lot from. I had a training camp with him at the Olympic training center. So he's a guy I really look up to. He's one of my favorite fighters.”
