From One City to Another
The El Paso Chihuahuas trace their roots back to well over a century to the year 1903. That was the year when the Los Angeles Angels were incepted. That Angels team has no connection with the MLB team in action today though. That Angels team was a minor league side and one of the first members of the Pacific Coast League.
The Angels were a dominant side. They won an incredible eleven league titles between 1903 and 1956. They also clinched twelve pennants during the same time frame. The team was however then sold to Walter O'Malley who also owned the Brooklyn Dodgers. That change in ownership was one of the signs that the Dodgers were about to make the move to Los Angeles.
The Angels then moved to Spokane for the 1958 season and the team became the Spokane Indians, the original version of the Spokane Indians. That arrangement remained in place till 1971 before they moved to Albuquerque in New Mexico to start play as the Albuquerque Dukes. Quite a few Dukes players made the jump to the Dodgers in the MLB and shined. In fact, the manager Tommy Lasorda also went on to become the coach of the LA Dodgers. Those star players and Lasorda clinched three pennants and a World Series title with the Dodgers between 1977 and 1981.
After staying in New Mexico for close to two decades, the team moved cities once again. This time they went to Portland and became the Portland Beavers in the year 2001. Their stay in Portland lasted for ten years. The stay ended because they could not get a ballpark that was to become the replacement of the current Providence Park. The original plan was to move the side to Escondido in California that was just forty miles away from San Diego. The idea was to make the San Diego Padres the owners of the minor league team but once again they could not get a ballpark in the city and that move was put on hold. Instead, they moved to Tucson in Arizona to become the Tucson Padres.
The El Paso Move
On July 3, 2012, the PCL gave initial approval to MountainStar Sports Group to purchase the Tucson Padres in order to move the team to El Paso for the start of the 2014 campaign. On September 17, 2012, the deal was given the official seal of approval with a condition that the city will allow for the provision of a new ballpark. That hurdle was cleared on September 18th when the mayor of the city refrained from vetoing the deal. On September 26th, MountainStar Sports officially became the owners of the team.
The El Paso Team
A contest was held to find a new name for the team. On October 22, 2013, the Chihuahuas was announced as the official name along with the colors and the logo of the side. Some construction issues forced the team to play the first twenty four encounters away from their home, the under construction Southwest University Park. The wait to play at home finally ended on April 28 when they took on the Fresno Grizzlies.
The El Paso Chihuahuas have had a stellar run in El Paso too. They won the division title in 2015 to get their tenure in the new city up and running. The next year turned out to be an even better one. The Chihuahuas won another division championship that season. That was followed by a conference championship and a league title to cap off an incredible season. They went on to win another division and conference double the next year.
Will the latest season turn out to be another successful one for them? They will certainly be in the running for all the three major titles this year too. If you want to see how they fare during what promises to be a cracking season, book your El Paso Chihuahuas tickets now.
