The Oilers have had a checkered history in the NHL. The franchise was created in 1971 to play in the World Hockey Association. At that time, the area of Alberta had two ice hockey teams participating in the WHA. The other team was known as Calgary Broncos. When the Broncos relocated to Cleveland, the Oilers franchise decided to change its name to Alberta Oilers. However, the name was not popular and was changed back to Edmonton Oilers after only a year.
