The Red Wings became one of the most dominant teams in the NHL from the 1930s to the 1960s. In fact, between 1933 and 1966, there were only four seasons in which the team failed to reach the post season. However, an era of mediocrity followed for the franchise, before the Red Wings rallied and reestablished themselves as a dominant force in the league.

After twenty five years of paltry success, in which the team only reached the post season eight times, the Red Wings were called the “Dead Wings” by fans of their opponents. However, things turned around at the star of the 1990 season and the franchise has gone on to become one of the most successful teams in the league.

Since 1990, the team has finished with the best regular season record in six years and has reached the Stanley Cup finals six times. Overall the team has reached the post season every year since then (twenty five years) and this is the longest playoff appearance streak in US sports.

2015-2016 Season

The Red Wings finished the 2015-2016 regular season with a 41-30-11 overall record. They managed to reach the playoffs and for the third consecutive season, they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. The team lost 4-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightening.
