The Early Years
The Detroit Lions were initially called the Portsmouth Spartans. The franchise was founded in Portsmouth, Ohio before moving to Detroit, Michigan. The Portsmouth Spartans played as an independent team so most of the hired players too were players from other defunct teams.
Even though the Spartans were doing fairly well but the team just could not generate decent revenue because of the Great Depression and was moved to Detroit. That is when they changed their name from Portsmouth Spartans to Detroit Lions. With the help of Detroit radio executive George Richards, the Lions managed to play its first season as part of the NFL in 1934.
Detroit Lions Championship Journey
The Detroit Lions won the NFL Championship for the first time in 1935. It was in the 1950s when they really hit their stride. During that decade, the Lions got their hands on three NFL Championships (1952, 1953, 1957). They have also won plenty of other accolades over the years too.
NFL Championships – 04.
Super Bowl – 0.
Division Championships – 04.
Conference Championships – 04.
Detroit Lions Rivalries
The Detroit Lions have major rivalries with the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, and the Green Bay Packers.
Chicago Bears
The Bears and Lions have been one of the longest running rivalries in football, with the two teams playing against one another at least once since the 1930s. Back then, the Lions were known as the Portsmouth Spartans. As of September 27, 2022, during the Super Bowl era, they have faced each other in 111 regular season games. The Bears lead the head-to-head 57-53-1.
Minnesota Vikings
The Lions became instant rivals of the Vikings when Minnesota entered the league in 1960. As of September 27, 2022, the Vikings and the Lions have faced off in 112 regular season encounters during the Super Bowl era. The record is 78-33-1 in favor of the team from Minnesota.
Green Bay Packers
The Packers vs. Lions is a rivalry that keeps on giving. It is strange at first why the Lions’ fans are so pumped about this rivalry since they have repeatedly lost to the Packers since 1991. However, that is perhaps what keeps fuelling the fans. The games are engaging simply because the Lions put up such a good fight, that one can’t tell which way the game will turn until the very end.
As of September 27, 2022, the Lions and Packers have played 114 regular season games during the Super Bowl era. The Packers lead the head-to-head 65-45-4. The Packers also are also ahead by 2-0 against the Lions in the postseason.
