The Des Moines Buccaneers is a Tier I junior ice hockey franchise that is part of the USHL, the United States Hockey league. This fabulous team hails from the city of Des Moines within the US state of Iowa and is one of the best teams within the USHL. This fascinating team was founded way back in 1980 and today plays in the West Division of the USHL. The team’s home arena is the Buccaneer Arena, located at Urbandale, Iowa. The official colours of this team are white, red and blue with the owner being Gil Peled. The general manager of the team is Regg Simon who is also the head coach of the team. When it comes to championships, the Des Moines Buccaneers have won a total of seventeen championships. Since this franchise’s founding, it has played at the Buccaneer Arena at Urbandale within the state of Iowa. The Des Moines Buccaneers have also won the Anderson Cup Championship four times and the Clark Cup Championships four times. The Anderson Cup Championships was won in the 1993 to 1994 season, 1994 to 1995 season, 1997 to 1998 season and the 1998 to 1999 season. The Clark Cup Championship was won in the 1991 to 1992 season, 1995 to 1996 season, 1998 to 1999 season and 2005 to 2006 season.
The Des Moines Buccaneers have been home to some talented and highly successful ice hockey players. Many of the players have received scholarships and gone on to play ice hockey in the NCAA Division I with many of them going on to play professional ice hockey. An excellent example is Scott Clemmensen who played NCAA Division I hockey and then went on to play professional for the New Jersey Devils. He now plays for the Florida Panthers and has made a name for himself in the world of professional ice hockey. Yet another player is Kyle Okposo who went to the University of Minnesota and is now part of the New York Islanders.
Amazingly, the very first season the Des Moines Buccaneers played in, they managed to finish second. A season later, they finished third and then maintained a position that hardly moved one from a third. In the 1990 to 1991 season, the Des Moines Buccaneers rose to rank second in the USHL and the next year, the team also ranked second winning the Clark Cup as well as the Gold Cup. The next season, this franchise again maintained its second position in the USHL but the team’s best seasons to date are the 1994 to 1995 season when it ranked first in the USHL, won the Anderson Cup, the Clark Cup and the Gold Cup as well as the recent 2005 to 2006 season when this franchise became the National Champions and won the Clark Cup.
