Deontay Wilder: Looking Back on The Bronze Bomber’s Accomplishments
One of the most fearsome strikers in the world of boxing, Deontay Wilder has been the WBC Heavyweight Champion since 2015. When he beat Haitian-Canadian fighter Bermane Stiverne for the belt that year, it was the first time in nearly a decade that an American had won the title.
Unlike most professional boxers, Wilder had a bit of a late start in the sport. Kicking things off in 2005 at the age of 20, his performances as an amateur began turning heads soon afterwards. At the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the Alabama native was part of Team USA’s contingent.
Wilder went on to win the bronze medal (heavyweight division) at the games. Later on, this led to his nickname “The Bronze Bomber,” a term coined by the Olympic medalist himself. It was inspired by Joe Louis, the former world heavyweight champion and one of the greatest heavyweight pugilists ever, who was known as “The Brown Bomber.”
Before his great showing at the Olympics, Wilder upset the favorites to secure victories at the US Championships and the National Golden Gloves in 2007. Following the Beijing games, he made his professional debut against Ethan Cox in Nashville. A second-round TKO win teed off an undefeated career on which the only blemish so far has been the split-decision draw for the world heavyweight championship against Tyson Fury in 2018.
Wilder will be looking to put that right when he takes on the Briton once again in early 2020. His current record of 42-0 contains an incredible 41 KO wins. Watch his battle to make it 43-0 by getting Deontay Wilder tickets.
Tyson Fury: A Look at the Gypsy King
British boxer Tyson Fury is a former unified WBO, WBA (Super), IBF, IBO, The Ring magazine and lineal heavyweight champion of the world. In 2015, he defeated the longstanding heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko which ended the Ukrainian’s lengthy reign at the top of the mountain. It was also his first defeat in over a decade.
As an amateur, Fury represented both Ireland and England. In 2008, he won the ABA Super Heavyweight Championship at the age of 20. Since turning pro later that year, his record reads 29-0 including 20 KOs. The only blip was the stalemate against his next opponent Deontay Wilder.
Wilder vs. Fury: The Story So Far
In December, 2018, the Staples Center in Los Angeles hosted what has now become known as Wilder vs. Fury I. A capacity crowd at the home of the NBA’s LA Lakers and the LA Clippers watched the two warriors slog it out for 12 rounds. One of the judges scored in favor of Wilder, another scored in favor of Fury while the third called it a tie. Enjoy the final and decisive chapter of this saga by getting Deontay Wilder tickets.
