The Denver Pioneers are the collective name given to the 17 varsity sports teams from the University of Denver. All teams are classified as part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and are filed under Division I. They also play under the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and have been part of this union since July 2012. The teams are some of the oldest sports groups to come from a university in the United States, having existed since 1867 and actively competing since then. In the beginning, however, they had no proper name. This remained the case until the 1920s, after which "Pioneers" was suggested as a result of a student contest which asked people to come up with a title.
