In 2017, the first round of the cup will be held from the 3rd to the 5th of February. There are eight match-ups scheduled to take place, each being held at a different location. The first round match between the United States and Switzerland will be held at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex.
About the Davis Cup
The Davis Cup is an annual international team event of men’s tennis. The tournament is administered by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is held in numerous locations annually.
The tournament was founded 116 years ago in 1900 when the men’s tennis teams from Great Britain and the United States played against each other. Since then, the tournament has expanded considerably and now features a vast plethora of teams from around the world. In 2016, 135 different countries entered their tennis teams into the tournament.
The United States has won the most number of World Championships with 32 wins.

The First Round of the 2017 Davis Cup
In 2017, the 106th edition of the Davis Cup will be held. There are 16 teams participating in the event from Argentina, Croatia, United States, Switzerland, Australia, Great Britain, Serbia, Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, Belgium, France, Japan, Canada, Germany and Russia.
In the first round of the tournament, there will be eight different match-ups taking place in different locations. Each match up is a best of five match series held from February 3rd to 5th.
The match-ups are as follows:
Argentina and Italy will play against each other in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Belgium and Germany will face each other in Frankfurt, Germany; Czech Republic will play Australia in Kooyong, Australia; Switzerland will take on United States in Birmingham, US; Japan and France will play each other in Tokyo, Japan; Canada and Great Britain will face off in Ottawa, Canada; Russia and Serbia will play each other in Niš, Serbia; and Spain will take on Croatia in Osijek, Croatia.
The winners from these first round match ups will advance to the quarterfinals, which will be held between the 7th and 9th of April, 2017. This is followed by the Semi-finals in September, and the final which is held between the 24th and 26th of November.
The team that wins the Davis Cup will be called the World Champion team.
United States takes on Switzerland
The United States Tennis Association announced that the first round matchup between the US and Switzerland would be held in Birmingham, Alabama, at the Legacy Arena.
The best of five match series will start off with two singles matches between the number one players from each team versus the number two players from each team. This is followed by a doubles match the next day.
On the last day, the two number one players on each team will play each other and the two number two players on each team will face each other.
Together, the five matches are referred to as a ‘tie’. The first country that wins three matches will win the tie.
Scoring in the matches is done by best-of-five tiebreak sets.
