Copa America is celebrating its 100^th anniversary in 2016. Beginning in 1916 the first tournament was dubbed ?CampeonatoSudamericano de Football? in which teams from Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Chile took each other on. Uruguay won the 1916 championship winning during penalty shootouts. Following the success of this tournament the Uruguayan Football Association formed CONMEBOL on 9^th July, 1917. Uruguay held their position as the champion, winning in 1917 as well (1-0, against Argentina). From then onwards the tournament was held on an annual basis and it wasn?t until the year 1959 that it was decided that Copa America be held after every four years.
