Not only are they known for their fierce game, but they have also become a symbol of celebration and glory. Since the 2007-08 season, a Napoleon Cannon has been fired every time the Blue Jackets set foot on the field. This cannon is a memorial of the handmade cannon used in the 1857 Civil War by Napoleon and his folks, and is placed at their home in Nationwide Arena. Every time the Jackets score a goal or win a game, the cannon is fired in celebration. Since the beginning of this tradition, the cannon has been fired 164 times, 103 times for goals scored and 20 times for victories. The team of Columbus Blue Jackets is a true representation of the rich historical state of Ohio. The name Blue Jackets was chosen to celebrate the jingoism and pride of the state, as well as to reference the Civil War history weaved as a part and parcel of Columbus and Ohio. The state stood up to Abraham Lincoln’s call offering twenty-three infantry regiments, and the name is also in the memory of American Revolutionary War hero Shawnee, who was also known as Blue Jacket.

In 2000, the Columbus Blue Jackets were formed as an expansion team for the state of Ohio in the National Hockey League. The team representing Ohio in the ECHL before that was the Columbus Chill, while the Cleveland Barons generally represented the state in other competitions. They had their own way of making their mark in the ice hockey sphere. They were validated as a team with a promising future in 2009 when they qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time. Since then, they have taken the high road and have no plans to come down any time soon.

The Blue Jackets seem to be in really good shape with their decent roster. Their current team lineup includes Jared Boll, Derick Brassard, Chris Clark, Mike Commodore, Derek Dorsett, Nikita Filatov, Mathieu Garon, Jan Hejda, Kristian Huselius, Rostislav Klesla, Derek MacKenzie, Steve Mason, Ethan Moreau, Andrew Murray, Marc Methot, Rick Nash, Samuel Pahlsson, Antoine Vermette, Kris Russell, Anton Stralman, R. J. Umberger, Jakub Voracek, Kyle Wilson, and Fedor Tyutin. These players have done their team proud by winning various honors and trophies. Rick Nash has been the National Hockey League Foundation Player and has also won the Rocket Richard Trophy. Steve Mason has brought home a Calder Memorial Trophy for the 2008-09 season. John H McConnell is the honored member of the team.
