Since the beginning of this tradition, the cannon has been fired 164 times, 103 times for goals scored and 20 times for victories. The team of Columbus Blue Jackets is a true representation of the rich historical state of Ohio. The name Blue Jackets was chosen to celebrate the jingoism and pride of the state, as well as to reference the Civil War history weaved as a part and parcel of Columbus and Ohio.
