The Colorado State Rams is the general name given to the various sports teams at the “Colorado State University”. In total, the team competes in 16 different sporting events, both for men and for women. Perhaps the more popular ones are football and baseball. However, over the years, volleyball, swimming, and softball have also become really popular with the women’s teams. Other than that, golf, track, tennis, basketball, water polo and cross country are also commonly played around the campus. These teams play alongside 8 other college teams, and are collectively known as the “Mountain West Conference”. They are also classified as being part of the first division of the NCAA. The teams have gone through a number of different names over the years before finally settling for the Colorado State Rams. Initially, they were known as the "Aggies" because at the time, the college was known by a different name, "Colorado Agriculture and Mechanical College". Their football field was located on the Western hillside and had an enormous "A" painted onto the grass in the team’s honor. The football team uses this field even today for it is their home base.
Most of the Colorado sports teams have prestigious sports venues as their home bases. For example, the "Sonny Lubick Field" at the "Hughes Stadium" was named after the football coach of the Ram’s. Especially for the team, the college underwent a number of different renovations, accounting to about $15 million dollars. Moreover, the Moby Arena is also home to both the women’s and men’s basketball team at Colorado. It is also used by the indoor volleyball team. The venue can seat over 9000 people and can make for very exciting games during the spring season.
All sports teams at the college have the same mascot—"CAM the Ram". He is currently the official representation. Having gone through more than 21 different mascots, the costumed Ram version is the presently being used. In the early days, a live version was also used. In 2006, the costumed switched paths from the original theme and went for a Rambouillet breed of a sheep instead. The name of the mascot has been modeled after the old name of the college, "Colorado Agricultural and Mechanical". His routines are always featured at the beginning and during the half time. Because of the size of the costume, 8 people have to work as the operators.
Football season is in the air again, and the team is preparing itself to beat their long time rivals, the "Buffalo Bills". They now have a new coordinator, one that the management specially hired from Alabama, Steve Fairchild.
