Club America Cities
Club America is one of the greatest soccer clubs in Mexico and has won more international tournaments than any other team in the CONCACAF. The team traces its roots back to almost a hundred years and has also provided the stage for some incredibly talented players from Mexico to shine in the past. The club has the most supporters in the whole country and their home turf, the Estadio Azteca, is the third biggest soccer arena in the world.
A look back
Club America was formed in 1916 by a group of college students. Soccer was rising in popularity all over Mexico with several amateur and professional teams cropping up during that time. Students from the Colegio Mascarones and the Colegio Marista de la Perpetua decided to set up their own teams in order to compete against one another. The two sides merged together shortly afterwards to form Club America.
The club’s name came from one of the first members of the team, Pedro "Cheto" Quintanilla. Since the club was formed on Columbus Day he decided that America would be a fitting name. The club’s iconic yellow and blue jersey was the idea of Rafael Garza Gutiérrez, the first official head coach of Mexico’s national soccer team.
Success on the pitch
During Club America’s time as an amateur soccer club, it went on to win one Copa Mexico and four back to back division titles from 1924 to 1928. However after going professional, they have enjoyed an even more prolific run of form which has resulted in a record twelve division titles. They have also won five Copa Méxicos and five Campeón de Campeones titles to go with one InterLiga championship.
On the international stage, Club America outshine all other CONCACAF teams too. They have won the CONCACAF Champions League six times, the Copa Interamericana twice and the CONCACAF Giants Cup once.
The future looks bright
Club America was in form last season and clinched the Apertura 2014 division title once again. They also lifted their sixth CONCACAF Champions League title, equaling the record previously held by their arch rivals Cruz Azul. They will be eager to add to their considerable success this season too. You can now be part of the club’s journey as they bid to reach even greater heights like winning the Copa Libertadores or the FIFA Club World Cup.
