A Little History
The Citrus Bowl began proceedings for the first time way back in the year 1947. Known as the Tangerine Bowl back then, the first game was held in front of a crowd of nine thousand fans. The two programs that faced off were Catawba and Maryville. Catawba won the inaugural Citrus Bowl 31-6 after a dominant performance. They repeated the trick next year as well by beating Marshall 7-0 in a very low scoring affair.
The game is now among the oldest bowl games outside the CFP bowl games and its 4.25 million dollar payoff per side also is the largest of any bowl game outside the CFP. The name of the game has changed quite a few times over the years too.
The Big Winners
Tennessee, Georgia and Michigan are the schools that have won the Citrus Bowl the most number of times. They have also clinched the title four times each. Then there is a group of East Texas St, Toledo, Miami OH and Auburn who have all won it thrice each.
In terms of the most Citrus Bowl appearances, Georgia and Florida share that record with six trips each to the game. Then Tennessee, Auburn, Penn State, Michigan and LSU share the second position with five appearances each.
Attendance Record
The attendance record for the Citrus Bowl was set in 1998 when 72,940 fans turned up t watch the game between Florida and Penn State. 72,456 fans bought Citrus Bowl tickets to watch the game between Penn State and Tennessee in 1994 to set the record for the second biggest crown in Citrus Bowl history. The third largest crowd attendance record in the game's history was set in 1991. That day 72,328 people watched the game between Georgia Tech and Nebraska.
The Venue
The Citrus Bowl has been held at the Camping World Stadium every year since the year 1947. The only exception being 1973 when it was held at the Florida Field due to construction work being done at the regular stadium.
The Camping World Stadium has its own place in history as it hosts the Camping World Bowl and the Cure Bowl too. The stadium opened its doors for the first time in the year 1936 and had a seating capacity of 8,900 at the time. Over the years, renovation work has been done on the venue and its seating capacity has been gradually increased to 65,194 which can also be expanded according to the nature of the event being held.
The Camping World Stadium has played host to various events over the course of its illustrious history. On April 2, 2017, it hosted WrestleMania 33 that was watched by 75,245 fans which set a new attendance record for the venue. The previous record was of 74,635 which was set at WrestleMania XXIV on March 30, 2008.
