The appeal of football or soccer is universal. And for good reason too as it stands at the moment the most popular sport in the world with an estimated 3.5 billion fans in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America.
Worldwide Appeal
The 2016 final of the Champions League was played at the San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy, between two Spanish teams. This was only the second time in history that the finalists were both from the same country. Just to give an idea as to how popular this tournament is, the Super Bowl is the most watched sporting event in the US with 172 million viewers. The UEFA Champions League’s final in 2015 had an estimated 180 million viewers in 200 countries.
Europe’s Finest
It would be safe to say that the UEFA Champions League represents the cream of European football. With football clubs such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United competing, every moment of the Champions League tournament is pure talent and excitement. In fact some of the biggest players owe their careers to this tournament. Just to name a few David Beckham, Xabi Alonso, Zinedine Zidane, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paolo Maldini have all played crucial games and as a result made a name for themselves not only in Europe but all over the world.
The UEFA Champions League is a tough tournament. In its 62 year history, Real Madrid is the only football team that has won this tournament a record 11 times. They are closely followed my AC Milan with 7 wins and Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Liverpool with 5 wins each. In short, the Champions League is a tough cookie to crack. With the top teams from Europe competing, since its restructuring in 1992, no team has won the Champions League consecutively. Real Madrid on the other holds the distinction for winning the Champions League a record 5 times in a row. These were also the first five years the tournament was held. Since then the Champion League title has always been reserved for the truly worthy.
A History of Exciting Games
The Champions League is known for its exciting games. For instance one that stands out is the 2005 Champions League Final between AC Milan and Liverpool. This final was played on May 25, 2005, between heavy favorites AC Milan and British underdogs Liverpool. Played in Istanbul, Turkey, Milan took an early lead and by the time the first half came to a close, Liverpool were three goals behind. The second half can perhaps be described as one of the biggest comebacks in Champions League history with Liverpool scoring three goals in six minutes. After a scoreless extra time, the final went into penalties where Liverpool won 3-2. The win for Liverpool was particularly sweet as the last time they had lifted the Champions League trophy was in 1984 as opposed to AC Milan’s win only two years ago in 2003.
Some other Champions League games that deserve a mention in this section are the Semi Final First Leg on April 7, 1999, between Dynamo Kyiv and Bayern Munich that saw Andriy Shevchenko score two important goals. The Juventus Manchester United Semi Final Second Leg game on April 21, 1999, which the English team won 4-3 on aggregate, is also notable. And who can forget the most recent game between Manchester City and Monaco. This last 16 first leg game played on February 21, 2017 was a display of errors by both teams however, credit goes to the players who kept pushing till the end. Even though Manchester City won 5-3, Monaco won many fans with their lightning attack.
Simply put, Champions League is football at its finest. If you’re a fan of football or soccer for that matter then you must not miss out on Champions League tickets available here.
