The Champions Classic follows a pattern that ensures each team plays against the other three teams. The matchups that began in 2011, finished in 2013 as one particular teams plays against the other team, once every year. The teams involved in the Champions Classic agreed to renew this rotation in 2014. Last year the venue selected for the Champions Classic was the United Center in Chicago, where Michigan State faced off with Kentucky and Kansas was paired with Duke. Michigan State and Kansas came out as victors with narrow wins.

It’s an honor to be included in the Champions Classic. As Head Coach of Michigan State, Tom Izzo puts it; the competing teams are some of the premier programs in college basketball, not only currently, but throughout the history of the sport. The three year event gives the fans the opportunity to watch their team play against top level competition in three major cities. It’s a reward for the passionate fans who support their team through thick and thin; it’s like having a preseason Final Four.

This year’s Champion Classic will see Michigan State take on the blue army, Duke, while Kansas will play against Kentucky. When these heavy weights headline the games a huge turnout can definitely be expected. In the inaugural Champions Classic, the games drew in close to twenty thousand spectators. In the next two editions the crowd was in excess of twenty two thousand. The teams belong to different conferences which make their encounters all the more exciting to watch. Michigan State belong to the Big Ten, Duke to the ACC, Kansas plays in the Big Twelve and Kentucky are members of the SEC.

This year the teams will play at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse, an indoor arena located in Indianapolis, Indiana. The multi-purpose arena which can host ice hockey games as well, is officially known as the home of the Indiana Pacers from the NBA and the Indiana Fever belonging to the WNBA.

The Michigan State Spartans and the Kentucky Wildcats are particularly known for competing in the ‘Basketbowl’. It saw the most spectators in college basketball history to ever attend a basketball game. Played at the Ford Field the number of people who attended the game crossed seventy eight thousand. Although these two teams won’t be playing against each other, their large number of supporters will surely be there. The four teams have collectively amassed a record of twenty two NCAA Final Four appearances over the past twenty years.

Duke has featured seven times, Michigan State six times, followed by Kansas and Kentucky with five and four appearances respectively. Their achievements can further be highlighted by the fact that all four of the teams are ranked among the top sixteen according to the ESPN/USA Today poll. While Duke sits at the top on the number one spot, Kansas is ranked fourth, Michigan State is at eighth place and Kentucky is sixteenth.
