The History of CF Montreal

CF Montreal was incepted in the year 1992 as Impact de Montréal FC. They were members of the American Professional Soccer League and that remained the case till 1994. The CF Montreal clinched their maiden league title in 1994 by defeating the Colorado Foxes. It marked the first time a soccer team from Montreal had won a professional soccer title.

They joined the A-League from 1995 to 2004 and went on to win three straight championships between 1995 and 1997. They joined the United Soccer Leagues First Division (USL-1) from 2005 all the way to 2009. They got off to a flying start and went on a run of 15 games unbeaten. As a result of that, they finished an impressive 10 points ahead of their second place rivals. Unfortunately though, they came up short against the Seattle Sounders in the semi-final round.

The CF Montreal were crowned regular season champions in 2005 and 2006 and then won the championship in 2009.

The Move to MLS

It was at the end half of 2007 that noise about the franchise’ move to the MLS began to gather pace. Then the construction of Saputo Stadium added fuel to the fire even further. Toronto FC had a deal with the MLS that gave them exclusive rights to be the league’s only Canadian representatives till 2009, but they officially stated in 2008 that had no objections to CF Montreal joining the MLS.

A lot of efforts were put in behind the scenes to make the franchise join the MLS and all the hard work eventually paid off when they started playing in 2012. They have qualified for the postseason every season since they first joined the MLS. They have won 5 Canadian Championships, a title which gives the winner the right to appear in the CONCACAF Champions League. They have also finished runners-up in the Canadian Championship on two occasions.
