One of the famous teams and champions of the NCAA are Central Michigan Chippewas. The Michigan Chippewas basketball team represents the Central Michigan University in this tournament as well as other local competition. The team is based in the Mount Pleasant campus of the university and trains at the McGuirk Arena.

The team is a participants of the Mid-American Conference. It is currently under the direction of Head Coach Keno Davis and assistant coaches Kyle Gerdeman, Kevin Gamble and Jeff Smith. These figures are very important as they have helped the team play, unity as well as the form of every player.
The Chippewas have played in four NCAA tournaments, two NAIA tournaments and numerous NBA tournament. In 1975 NCAA tournament, the team earned a Regional third position. It made till the first round in 1977 and 1987 NCAA tournaments. Also it reached the second round in the 2003 tournament. All four tournaments combined earned the team a score of 3-4.
In the NAIA tournaments played in 1966 and 1967, the team earned 2 and 2 wins and losses. During this tournament, it played under the former coach Ted Kjolhede, who was titled 'Coach of the Year' back in 1966. About fourteen Chippewas team members have participated in the NBA tournament games playing under different NBA leagues. Except 1975-76 season, every season a Central Michigan Chippewas member has participated in NBA tournaments. Currently, the New Orleans based player Chris Kaman also played in the NBA games.
Some of the brilliant Chippewas who have made it all the way to the NBA include Willie Iverson( the first to play in NBA with Miami Floridians), Paul Botts (1971) and Ben Kelso (played with Detroit Pistons in 1972 and then in 1973). In 1975, Dan Roundfield played for two NBA leagues and James McElroy for a single one. This was followed Ben Poquette (1977), Dave Grauzer (1978), Jeff Tropf and Val Bracey (1979), Mike Robinson (1981), Melvin McLaughlin (1983), Ervin Leavy (1987) and Dan Majerle (1988) making their own mark in the NBA.
The Chippewas roster for the 2013-2014 season includes names like Spencer Krannitz, DeAndray Buckley, Derrick Richardson, Chris Fowler, John Simons and Zack Sailor to mention a few.
