Starting in 1961, the annual auto race Canadian Grand Prix has been a part of the Formula One World Championship since 1967. It began as a sports car event, with the first race held at Mosport Park, after which Formula One took over the event. The current home of the event is Île Notre-Dame in Montreal.
Canadian Grand Prix was one of the premier events of the new Canadian Sports Car Championship. The first championship race under Formula One racing was held between the Italian and German rounds, and was won by Jack Brabham. Ferrari made its debut in 1977. After 1978, the venue shifted to Montreal, and the first winner was Ferrari driver Quebec native Gilles Villeneuve. In 1979, Alan Jones of Australia won the championship. The famous rivalry of Nelson Piquet and Jones came to the fore during the 1980s championship. After the death of Villeneuve in 1982, Montreal was renamed Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in his honor. He was also inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame, the only Canadian to do so.
In 1991, there was a dramatic finale with Nigel Mansell's Williams failing on the last lap, while Alain Prost won the 1993 event. At the end of 2008, the Canadian Grand Prix was dropped from the 2009 Formula One calendar. However, at the end of 2009, the Formula One Administration signed a five-year contract with the Canadian Grand Prix organizers. The 2011 event was the longest ever Formula One race to date, delayed for hours due to rainstorms.
The Canadian Grand Prix races consist of 70 laps and the circuit has a length of 4.361 km. At the start of the race, the cars race against each other, exhibiting their set of skills, speed, and tactics. The drivers may make pit stops to change tyres, repair damage, and maximize the car's potential.
Michael Schumacher from Germany has won the championship seven times, while Nelson Piquet from Brazil and Lewis Hamilton from Britain have each won the championship three times. The Ferrari automobile marque holds the record of competing in every season and winning the most championships, having won thirteen of them.
In 2005, the Canadian Grand Prix was the third most-watched sport and the most-watched Formula One Grand Prix in the world.
