Calgary Flames: The Beginning
The Calgary Flames were set up in 1972 in Atlanta. The then Atlanta Flames joined the NHL as an expansion side along with the New York Islanders. After 8 years in The Big Peach, they moved to Calgary and became known as the Calgary Flames in 1980.
The Flames are one of two NHL franchises currently based in the Canadian province of Alberta. The Edmonton Oilers are the other. Both teams share an intense local rivalry dubbed as the “Battle of Alberta” and games between the two outfits are resultantly feisty affairs.
In the past, two other teams have also represented Calgary in pro hockey for short periods. They were the Calgary Tigers in the 1920s and the Calgary Cowboys in the 1970s. The Scotiabank Saddledome is the Flames’ current home arena. They have been based here since 1983. The team’s minor league affiliations are with the AHL’s Stockton Heat and the ECHL’s Kansas City Mavericks.
The 2019-20 Playoff Picture
Things are tight in the Pacific Division with very little separating the teams still in contention for a playoff berth. The Flames are in a good position and can qualify for the postseason with a good run until the end of the regular season. A lot will depend on the coming encounters against teams like the Columbus Blue Jackets, Vegas Golden Knights, New Jersey Devils, Winnipeg Jets, Arizona Coyotes, etc. Fans can enjoy all the action by getting Calgary Flames tickets.
Calgary Flames Home Arena: The Scotiabank Saddledome
The Scotiabank Saddledome has been the home of the Flames for almost the entirety of their stay in Calgary. This multi-purpose facility can seat up to 19,289 people for hockey games and is also regularly used for conferences, concerts and sporting events other than hockey.
Moreover, the Flames aren’t the arena’s only permanent tenants. The Calgary Hitmen of the WHL (Western Hockey League) and the Calgary Roughnecks of the NLL (National Lacrosse League) are also based here. Major events to have taken place at the Scotiabank Saddledome include the 1985 NHL All-Star Game, 2000 NHL Entry Draft and UFC 149. Musical acts like the The Moody Blues, Rod Stewart and Stevie Ray Vaughan have also performed at the home of the Flames.
Major Achievements
The Calgary Flames have won various honors in their storied history. An impressive trophy haul to date includes 7 Division championships, 3 Conference crowns, 2 Presidents’ Trophies and 1 Stanley Cup. The team of today is also eager to bring more glory to Cowtown and you can follow their journey by getting Calgary Flames tickets.
