BYU Cougars are the representative football team for the Brigham Young University. The university is situated at Provo, Utah, and has established its significance in college level sports for last many years. BYU Cougars played their first season in professional football in 1922, and have ever since maintained their performance through hard work. The team is based currently at LaVell Edwards Stadium, that has a capacity to accommodate over 64, 045 spectators at a time. The stadium is located in Provo, Utah, and has a natural grass surface.

The history of BYU Cougars dates back to 1896 when the university established its first football team, but their journey could not proceed after 1903. The program was restarted officially in 1922, and after some initial years of struggle, the team managed to get to the mainstream of success. It is believed that G. Ott Romney was the person who has the credit of bringing BYU Cougars on their track to success. The journey towards excellence continued uninterrupted through history only except in World War II when the program was suspended for about two years i.e. from 1943 till 1945. Another milestone in history of BYU Cougars was the arrival of LaVell Edwards, the coach who pushed up the performance graph for the team a great deal. LaVell Edwards was hired as coach in 1972, and through tremendous efforts as well as remarkable coaching skills, he transformed BYU Cougars football team into one of the best teams at their level. Edwards served the team till 2000. It was through his untiring efforts that the team became National Champion for the first time in history in 1984 at NCAA Division I – A National Championship.

Like any team in history, BYU Cougars have also seen many ups and downs in their journey through times, and many people including Gary Crowton, Bronco Mendenhall and others had their share in it. Overall, the team has always remained among the top of the line teams in college football at their level, and have always maintained their dignity in sports. BYU Cougars have also appeared in Bowl games for about 29 times, with 11 wins and 17 lost games. Among their traditional rivals are included Utah Utes and Utah State Aggies.
