The Butler Bulldogs represents the varsity teams from the Butler University. The Butler Bulldogs play various sports including football, soccer, basketball, baseball and many others. The Bulldogs take part in the intercollegiate sports in 19 NCAA Division I. Butler Bowl; the football stadium was built in 1927 and is a home to soccer and Butler football teams. The stadium was renovated in 2006 and included seventy five thousand seats, field turf and larger sidelines allowing Butler Bowl to host soccer, football as well as other events. Ovid Butler founded the Butler University in 1855. "Christians" was chosen by him as the school mascot, which later changed to a bulldog. Butler Blue turned out to be the first authorized live mascot of the school in 2000. Till today, three mascots have carried the name "Blue", which is the primary color of the university. These dog mascots include Butler Blue I, assigned in 2000 and it appeared on one NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2003, as well as on two Horizon League McCafferty All-Sports Championships from 2002 to 2003. Butler Blue II was appointed in 2004 and made appearance in two NCAA National Championships. He was also seen in three Sweet 16 appearances in 2007, 2010 and 2011 and three Horizon League McCafferty All-Sports Championships. He is still in service with the team. Butler Blue III was hired in 2011 and is in training at present.
Hink, in addition to the original mascot is another person wearing a bulldog costume and performs for different Butler University events. In 1993 the Bulldogs participated for the first time for Division I post-season play and competed in the WNIT. Head Coach Steve Farley has been leading the baseball team of the university for more than twenty years. The team’s success under his leadership includes Horizon League regular season championships and Horizon League tournament titles. Some of the most prominent athletic achievements of the Butlers can be seen in Cross Country. Butler is the recipient of nine consecutive Horizon League Championships in men’s and five women’s championships. In 2004 the men’s team stood fourth in the country receiving a team the award at the NCAA Division I championships.
Both teams were capable to qualify for the nationals, placing the team members as high as third. The Butler Cross Country team consists of Justin Young, Julius Mwangi, Fraser Thompson, Mark Tucker, Andrew Baker and Olly Laws. Former coach of the team named Joe Franklin was named the NCAA Division I Coach of the Year for his efforts in leading the Bulldogs to get 4th place finish in 2004.
