The Sabres joined the National Hockey League as an expansion franchise in the 1970-71 season. The team was owned by the renowned West New York family, the Northrup Knoxes and Seymour Knox III. Buffalo, New York has always been known for producing some of the best hockey talent in the league, and with this club, the city got its own team to be proud of. Prior to the formation of the Sabres, the city of Buffalo was represented by the Buffalo Bisons, who played in the American Hockey League. However, when the team folded, the process of forming a new hockey franchise began. Since most of the Buffalo-based sports teams had the name "Bison" attached to them, the Knoxes wanted a different name for the team. This was the reason they decided to hold a "name the team" contest. After the conclusion of the contest, the name "Sabres" was victorious, and the team was named accordingly.
After its formation, the Sabres had their first highlight of the franchise when they won the NHL Draft Lottery. This allowed them to welcome Gilbert Perreault in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. Later in his career, Perreault was inducted into the Hall of Fame. After the addition of several talented names to the roster, the Sabres went on to make their first ever playoff appearance in the 1972-73 season. The team made it to the playoffs just three years after their inception, however they lost the quarterfinals to the Montreal Canadiens, who later went on to win the Stanley Cup. This moment is marked as one of the initial bests in the team's history, as they became a highly sought-after club after that.
The next season was mediocre, but the team managed to achieve the best record in their 1974-75 regular season in the NHL. During that season, the Sabres made their first Stanley Cup Final appearance, squaring off with the Philadelphia Flyers. Unfortunately, the Sabres were not successful in winning the Cup, as the Flyers swept the series 4-2.Currently, the Sabres play their home games at the HSBC Arena, where they will play this season. The Sabres finished their 2009-10 season with a first-place position in their Divisional Standings and third position in their Conference Standings. This season, the Sabres will try to improve their performance and defend their Division Championship title as they celebrate their 40th anniversary. If you are a supporter of the Sabres, show your support by attending games at the HSBC Arena.
