Under the banner of the Boston College Eagles, students compete in a total of 31 collegiate sports, including many different clubs and recreational teams, also known as "intramural" teams. According to the Academic Progress Rate (APR), a metric used by the NCAA to measure collegiate teams' success, the Boston College Eagles are among the nation's most successful athletic teams academically. In 2006, Boston College received a Public Recognition Award for its 14 teams that ranked in the top 10 percent academically. These 14 teams included men's fencing, men's outdoor track, men's skiing, women's cross country, women's rowing, football, women's fencing, women's indoor track, women's field hockey, women's outdoor track, women's skiing, women's soccer, women's swimming, women's volleyball, and women's tennis. The football program that received the award was one of only five A teams in Division I to receive such an honor, the other four being Stanford, Navy, Duke, and Auburn. This was a huge achievement for the Eagles and helped them establish a strong fan base.   As one of the founding members of the Big East Conference, the Boston College Eagles are well-regarded in the collegiate athletic world. They joined another prestigious collegiate athletic league, the Atlantic Coast Conference, in 2005, further solidifying their reputation.
