What Brings You to Birmingham, Alabama?
The Birmingham Bowl was introduced to the city of Alabama in 2006. Sanctioned by the NCAA, the Birmingham Bowl is played every year at the seventy thousand plus capacity Legion Field. Throughout its history, the Birmingham Bowl has hosted some exciting games. One game that deserves a mention is the 2008 game between the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the NC State Wolfpack. The Wolfpack had a comfortable lead at halftime, however due to a knee injury to their QB, they lost to the Knights 29 – 23.
The Birmingham Bowl has tie-ins with The American, SEC and alternates with C-USA and MAC. With a payout of around two million dollars, the Birmingham Bowl has attracted many talented teams in the past. These include Cincinnati Bearcats, Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Pittsburgh Panthers. The Birmingham Bowl over the years has gone through a couple of sponsors. These include the pizza chain Papa John’s and BBVA Compass. ESPN has been the official broadcaster for this game from the start. Even though it started with ESPN 2, after the first year, the Birmingham Bowl has been broadcasted on ESPN ever since.
The South Carolina Gamecocks
The Clemson Tigers thrashing of the Gamecocks on Nov 27 must’ve hurt. Losing 56 – 7 can put even the strongest team on the back foot. Can’t do anything about the past, the Gamecocks will have to regroup and take the field on Dec 30 with a fresh perspective. The Gamecocks, as a team, have a lot going for them. For starters, their defense is strong enough and has enough speed on the outside to handle Bulls QB Quinton Flowers, especially when he tries to take off.
The Gamecocks have the ability to keep possession of the ball for long stretches. If they makes sure of this, the Gamecocks have a pretty good chance of coming out as the winners. The Bulls usually keep the ball for somewhere under 27 minutes per game. The reason for this is that whenever they get the ball they score. The Gamecocks should play on their strengths and keep the Bulls possession to a minimum. One player to look out for would be Gamecocks QB Jake Bentley. With two brothers already college QBs, Bentley has a lot of expectations to live up to. He certainly has the arm and the frame to do that.
The South Florida Bulls
The Bulls have an advantage over the Gamecocks. As witnessed in the Clemson game, the Gamecocks totally fell apart when the Tigers started scoring. The Bulls could rely on the same strategy. Once the Gamecocks see the Bulls score, there is a good chance the spectators may see another unraveling. Considering the fact that the bulls are on a winning streak (they’ve won their last four games) momentum is on their side. For South Florida fans, they’ll go into this game with a lot of confidence.
Another reason for their confidence will be their QB Quinton Flowers. The 6 feet, 210 lbs Miami native is getting rave reviews and he deserves them all. With a team high run of 1,425 yards coupled with 15 touchdowns, Flowers is making all the right moves. As far as his throws go he has 2.551 yards and 22 touchdowns with six picks. He is absolutely brilliant in the open field and there is a chance he might be considered for the 2017 Heisman Trophy.
The Dec 30 game is expected to be full of action and surprises. Fans from both schools will be descending to the Legion Field and if you’re looking to experience a great game of football get yourself some Birmingham Bowl tickets immediately.
