The Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament has been held annually since 1997. It was established a year after the Big 10 Conference was formed in 1996. Initially, the tournament was held at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri, every year in early March until 2002 and again in 2005. In 2003, 2004, and 2006, it was held at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. In 2007, it was held at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In 2008, the tournament returned to Kansas City, but this time at the Sprint Center.
In 2009, the tournament returned to Oklahoma City, and then from 2010 to 2016, it went back to Kansas City. It has recently been announced that the tournament will remain in Kansas City until 2020.

The Big 12 Conference is an athletic conference composed of ten colleges, eight of which are public and two of which are private Christian colleges. Based in Irving, Texas, the Big 12 Conference is a member of the NCAA's Division I for all sports, with the exception of men's soccer and hockey. When the Big 12 was initially formed in 1996, it had twelve schools. This changed in the 2010-13 Big 12 Conference realignment, after which the conference featured only ten schools. Nevertheless, the conference retained its name for marketing purposes and to avoid confusion with the Big Ten Conference. The schools that make up the Big 12 Conference include Baylor University Bears, Iowa State University Cyclones, University of Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas State University Wildcats, University of Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State University Cowboys, University of Texas at Austin Longhorns, Texas Christian University Horned Frogs, Texas Tech University Red Raiders, and West Virginia University Mountaineers. The Big 12 is one of the Power Five conferences, meaning it is expected to produce a College Football Playoff champion team each year. This March, fans of college basketball and the Big 12 Conference will descend upon Kansas City for this highly anticipated event.
