Named after the two mountain peaks called the Lions overlooking Vancouver, Canadian Football League’s BC Lions were conceptualized when Ken Stauffer and Tiny Radar started lobbying for a team representing Vancouver in 1951. However, their idea was not realized instantly and it took about 2 more years for the conditional franchise to be formed. One of the conditions of the franchise required the building of a majestic stadium with a seating capacity for 15,000 spectators. When the beautiful, grandiose Empire Stadium was built for the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, this condition was met more than adequately.

Unfortunately, the newly formed BC Lions in the 50s did not show a remarkable performance and only won a few games. However, things started looking good in the 1962 season as armed with a strong team and a new coach Dave Skrien, the team started showing improvements and in 1963 reached the championship game of Grey Cup for the first time. Due to injuries in the team, BC Lions did not win the cup in 1963 but were granted various other accolades to acknowledge their perseverance. In 1964, fans in British Columbia came out on the streets celebrating the winning of the Grey Cup by their lions for the first time.

The  early 70s saw the BC Lions showing mediocre performance; their dreams of winning the Grey Cup again in 1977 were shattered by a defeat to the Edmonton Eskimos. Again, they tried reaching the Grey Cup final but were thwarted again by their arch rivals Eskimos in 1981. 1983 started as a bright year for the BC Lions as they shifted to a new venue BC Place and stormed into the Grey Cup finals to play in front of their cheering home crowd. However, they lost by a small margin. The fantastic team reached the top position in the West and won their second Grey Cup in 1985.

In the early 1990s, the BC Lions encountered some ownership problems and showed average performance but came back rejuvenated in 1994 and won the Grey Cup for the third time after defeating the United States’ Baltimore team. 1999 was another good year for the lions; they performed really well but lost the Grey Cup. The new millennium started really well for the BC Lions as they won their fourth Grey Cup. The next Grey Cup came in 2006 after five years of changes in the team. In 2009, the team again went through major modifications and has now incorporated great new players. They are all ready to display their fantastic skills on the football field.
