Hockey in Bakersfield began at the start of the 1940s. That is when the region saw the arrival of its first team, the Bakersfield Oilers. They were a part of the California Ice Hockey Association and competed against the likes of the Loyola Lions, Santa Rosa Bullets, San Diego Rowers, and Los Angeles Athletic Club. Hockey was brought to a halt with the arrival of World War II, and that break lasted for seventeen years. A new team, the Bakersfield Kernels, came to the hockey landscape before stopping play in 1963.
Another extended break followed, ending with the Bakersfield Oilers making their return in the 1990s. They joined the Pacific Southwest Hockey League, a semi-professional division. The return of the sport attracted a lot of attention, and the surge in popularity paved the way for the management to apply and join the ranks of the West Coast Hockey League in the 1994-1995 season. The name of the team was changed to the Bakersfield Fog and they were one of the six first teams to join the West Coast Hockey League.
The fans had a team to follow, and follow them they did. The team re-located to their brand new home, the Bakersfield Centennial Garden, in 1998, and that’s when the name was changed to the Bakersfield Condors. Their first goal in their new arena came on October 23rd and was scored by Jay Neal. The first few seasons were a bit of a roller coaster ride, with the Condors spending most of that time trying to get a foothold in the league, with some instances of brilliance. All the hard work paid off spectacularly in the 2009-2010 campaign. The franchise played a total of seventy-two games that season and came out on top in thirty-eight of those, with a .5632 record over the course of the campaign. The Condors went on to capture their first ever division championship.
The Bakersfield Condors have made it to the playoffs a total of thirteen times over the course of their history. The team has gone from strength to strength, especially in the last few seasons, to finally reach a platform from which they can launch to greater heights. The future looks bright, and if they keep on the same path, it won’t take them too long to reach the top. So, if you are a supporter of this amazing team, grab your Bakersfield Condors tickets and root for them live.
