The Army Black Knights represent the United States Military Academy and are members of the NCAA Division I. The Black Knights are one of a handful of teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision who compete as independents, which means that they are not members of any conference.  The Black Knights played their first season in 1890 and have won three National Championships over the years. During the early twentieth century, the Army was considered to have one of the best college football programs in the country. The team had some hugely successful seasons especially during the 1940s, when they won three straight national titles (1944, 1945, 1946) and produced two Heisman Trophy winners in consecutive years (1945, 1946).

Army vs. Notre Dame:

Similar to the Army, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish were considered football powerhouses during the early part of the twentieth century. Both programs fielded strong teams and matchups between the two were highly anticipated each year. As the rivalry developed, the two teams met twenty-one times between 1925 and 1946.

The most famous of these encounters was the one which took play in 1946. Despite ending in a 0-0 draw, the game has been called the “Game of the Century” by numerous sports writers, for the sheer emotion and drama involved in it. Both programs had posted undefeated seasons and the game between the two would determine the front runner for the national championship. The teams have met on a regular basis since then and in 2010, faced off for the fiftieth time.

The Army had a dismal 2015 season, in which they finished with a 2-10 record.
