For decades, this remarkable tournament has been dishing out some of the most amazing encounters in American sports history at college level. The March Madness exemplifies everything that is great about sports. From stunning action to amazing upsets, the tournament has delivered it all. Wrestling and hockey both have seen their share of epic encounters but it is basketball that has been synonymous with the competition for the past seven and a half decades.

March Madness 2013 will be a special occasion because it will mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of one of the most popular sporting events in the country. The NCAA basketball 2014 tournament will be in full swing to headline this special occasion. The NCAA Men's basketball Championship has a long standing relationship with March Madness that began proceedings way back in 1939. Every year, it kicks off its festivities in the first week of March and goes all the way to April to commemorate the arrival of spring in the best way possible.

March Madness' history can be traced back to the year 1908 when Illinois High School Association sanctioned a basketball tournament between high schools in the country. It used to be an invitational affair during those days. That was the start of a tournament that later went on to capture the attention of college sports lovers.

Henry V. Porter coined the phrase March Madness in an essay he wrote and the name has stuck ever since. The rules have been tweaked over the years to ensure maximum participation of the teams and fans.

The NCAA March Madness 2013, just like the previous years, will be an elimination based competition. Sixty eight basketball teams from across the country will come face to face to earn the right to be the best in the country. Thirty-one conference title holders will automatically qualify for the tournament whereas the remaining thirty-seven sides will be selected by a special panel put together by the NCAA. The selection group will also be responsible for determining the seeding of every team.

One semifinal will be contested between the team at the top of the number one seed region and the fourth number one seed region. The second semifinal will see the champion of the second ranked number one seed going up against the winner of the third ranked number seed.

March Madness will be divided into four regions and each of those four regions will consist of a minimum of sixteen teams. An additional four sides are added to the mix on the basis of the decision taken by the selection committee. It is a very cumbersome process that needs a lot of consideration. The committee will number every team from one to sixty eight and then divide them into regions. The best four sides will get the number one seeds in every group followed by the second best teams getting placed at number two.

The entire process will be repeated until every team in the tournament has been seeded and put in a bracket. The committee will also be given the task of compiling the groups in such a way that no conference teams come face to face earlier than the regional finals stage. On top of that no repeats of games played in the regular season and the one played in the last competition should occur in the rounds of sixty four and thirty two. March Madness 2013 will start off with The First Four stage and end with The National Championship game.

The NCAA basketball March Madness 2013 promises to among the best of all time. The fact that it's based on a single elimination format adds much more intrigue to it and that increases the chance of upsets considerably. There are no second chances so every team will have to bring their A-game to the table. If you are a basketball fan then this is your chance to be a part of this wonderful tournament as it celebrates its seventy fifth anniversary in style.
