The Misfits reformed in 1995, with the same lineup shuffling trend as earlier, taking tours and releasing a few albums with varying members. Their most popular singles include "Bullet", "Dig Up Her Bones", "Monster Mash", "Land of the Dead", "Scream!", and "Horror Business" among others. Today, some of the biggest bands like Balzac, The Bouncing Souls, The 69 Eyes, The Crimson Ghosts, Deadguy, Crunchy Cereal, Endpoint, Ensign, Entombed, Drag the River, Metallica, NOFX, My Chemical Romance, The Nutley Brass, The Robots, One Small Step, Rodan, Samhain and Guns N' Roses, have paid tribute to the group, singing their covers. In 1983, after the Misfits initially disbanded, Danzig founded heavy metal-influenced rock bands, Samhain in 1983 and Danzig in 1987. In later years, Only, Doyle and Danzig had a series of legal conflicts over regaining the rights to perform and record as the Misfits. The two former members won this battle and created its new version in 1995 alongside drummer Dr- Chud and vocalist Michale Graves. This particular configuration had a characteristic rock metal sound, deeply engraved with heavy metal elements, and released the studio albums Famous Monsters, and America Psycho in 1999 and 1997, respectively. By 2000, this lineup too dissolved so that Jerry Only stood up as the next follow up, making himself the lead vocalist while recruiting former guitarist Dez Cadena of the Black Flag, along with Ramones' percussionist Marky Ramone. This incarnation then went on a tour to celebrate the bands' twenty-fifth anniversary. They also released a cover songs album called Project 1950, as they continued to tour rigorously for the next few years. By 2005, Ramone left the band, whose place was taken by guitarist Robo who had previously worked with both, Black Flag and the Misfits. The group's current lineup comprises of Jerry Only as bass guitarist and lead vocalist, Eric Arce as drummer and Dez Cadena as guitarist.

Misfits went on an extended thirtieth anniversary tour in 2009 and 2010, during which time they also released the single "Land of the Dead". The latter marked the group's first studio release in six years, as well as the only one featuring Robo, Only and Cadena. The band has since undergone another lineup change with Robo getting dismissed and replaced by Eric Arce, who had already toured with them. In 2011, they released a new album titled The Devil's Rain, tracks from which reference the horror films Ghost of Frankenstein, The Black Hole, Land of the Dead and Dracula. The same year former members Doyle and Danzig played Misfits' songs in four shows part of their Danzig Legacy tour. These shows hosted in Chicago were played to a sold-out audience.
