Kim Schifino and Matt Johnson met in New York where both of them were attending the Pratt Institute of Art. Soon after their first meeting, they started dating. Upon realizing that they share the same passion for music, the couple set out to learn playing instruments on their own but to play music live as a two-piece was not their personal decision. The formation of band was only made possible because of their friends who forced them to perform locally once they had started to get the hang of the music.

Since their first performance in October 2004, the band hasn?t stopped and has been playing at the nation?s major venues. Initially, the band had also performed at small clubs and basements, gaining many fans in the process. This newly found attention and love inspired Matt and Kim to start recording their songs and their first EP, "To/From" was released and the band also started their first US tour. It was after two years, in 2006, that the band debuted with their self-titled album which was released on IHEARTCOMIX record.

Although the first album of Matt and Kim was moderately successful, the live shows and the outgoing tours to promote the album helped them to gain more indie fans and get the much deserved popularity. Following that, the band said goodbye to the basements and started playing at high profile musical festivals like Lollapalooza and The Siren Music Festival.

 In 2009, the band signed a deal with FADER label to release their second studio album named "Grand". The YouTube video of one of the album?s single "Lessons Learned" was a major success that garnered them the Breakthrough Video Award at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Next year the duo released a hip-hop influenced album, "Sidewalks" which was co-produced by Matt, Oliver Strauss and Ben Allen. To promote this album, two US tours were headlined by the duo, first in fall 2010 and then in June 2011. They also kept playing at the major global music festivals like Big Day Out of Australia, V of UK and Fuji of Japan. Matt and Kim have also played to support other bands like My Chemical Romance and Blibk-182 on their tours. Best known for their party and upbeat style, the band was on their 2013. The event was a huge hit and cheap Matt and Kim tickets were sold very fast.
