Incubus is one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful American rock bands. Considered by many as gurus of funk metal, funk rock, alternative metal, and alternative rock music, they are in a league of their own. Generally considered to be a rock band, it is however difficult to confine their music to one specific music genre, since they employ various instruments into their music, usually not associated with a rock band. This is perhaps one of the reasons why their music has always stood out from the music of their contemporaries.

The Early Days
Incubus released their first demo tape, “Closet Cultivation” when the band members were in high school. This tape and its music made them famous in their high school prompting them to release more demo tapes like “Damnation,” “Purple Kool-Aid,” and “Miss Bliss.” These records were noticed by their music teacher at school, Joanne Stanulonis, who was also well connected in California’s music industry. She got them gigs at local Calabasas clubs like The Whiskey, The Troubadour, and The Roxy. This made Incubus a well know band in their town even before the members had graduated high school.
Slowly and steadily, the band worked its way up and in 1997 released their first major work in the form of “Enjoy Incubus.” It was an EP comprising of 6 tracks, which the band decided to release since they had been invited to play with Korn in Europe and wanted to have a major record label recording to their credit before leaving for Europe.
Their European visit came as an unexpected surprise for a relatively new band, encouraging them to release their second album in 1997 as well. "S.C.I.E.N.C.E.," was their second album, which made them open for bands like ‘311’ and ‘Korn’ on a regular basis. The band then toured with Ultraspank and System of a Down and performed at famous music festivals like Ozzfest and Family Values Tour concerts.
Rise to the Top of the Mountain
“Make Yourself,” Incubus’s third album, which was released in 1999, came after the band had taken a break for two years from their hectic touring schedule. Two years of break and creative thinking made this album one of their most successful albums. The album was certified double platinum, with unforgettable singles like Stellar, Pardon Me, and Drive. These three songs dominated the U.S. rock charts for weeks and reached the very top of the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.
Incubus did even better with "Morning View," which was released in 2001 by Epic Records. Their fourth studio album, it received triple-platinum certification, with smash hits like Nice to Know You and Wish You Were Here. Morning View, to date remains the band’s highest selling album.
The band in 2004 released their fifth studio album, under the title, “A Crow Left of the Murder…”. This album, following in the footsteps of its predecessors, was certified platinum by the Record Industry Association of America. It has since its release sold almost 2 million copies worldwide, selling well over 300,000 copies in its very first week of release alone. The album was not only a huge commercial success, reaching position no. 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200, but also received a lot of critical acclaimed.
The Run Continues
Incubus has gone on to release even more chartbusting and commercially successful albums like “Light Grenades,” and “If Not Now, When?.” Incubus went back to the studio during 2016 to work on a new album and aptly named it “8.” The album hit the stores in April of 2017 and climbed to the fourth spot on the Billboard 200 on its debut. The record also received fairly positive critical reviews, with AllMusic giving it three stars out of five.
