Flying Lotus is the stage name given to the music producer, Steve Ellison. Based in Los Angeles, California, he is an experimental musician and rapper who has produced music of different genres and creates different beats in his laptop. Ellison comes from a family of music. His great aunt was Alice Coltrane, the famous jazz pianist, who was married to John Coltrane, a saxophone player. In addition his cousin, Ravi Coltrane is also in the business. His grandmother is Marilyn McLeod, a notable songwriter who has worked with Diana Ross, penning her hit, “Love Hangover” and with Freda Payne on her single “I Get High (On Your Memory)”. The rapper and musician is currently performing in his very own concerts, so buy Flying Lotus tickets to visit a show near you.
So far, the singer has released four albums, the latest being in 2012. All the records have been received quite well by music critics who have given them rave reviews. Sometimes abbreviated as FlyLo, he contributes his music and mixes to different television shows and cartoons as well. His sound effects and beats are also used by other artists such as Mia Doi Todd. In 2012, he begun on a rap career as well and created a different persona to try his hand at the genre—Captain Murphy. The fact that Flying Lotus was in fact Captain Murphy was kept a secret for many months. It was in late 2012 when his mixtape "Duality" was released that he revealed that he was the same person.
Flying Lotus began his career in 2006 when he got signed to "Wrap Records". With them, he recorded six tracks which were to become part of his "Reset EP". With its release, he became amongst the label’s key artists. Thus, he released his major record with them called "Los Angeles". This was also the year that he worked with Radiohead, providing them with mixes. Flying Lotus remixed one of their songs, "Reckoner" which became quite popular. It was taken from their album "In Rainbows", and the single reentered the charts because of this remix. In 2010, he released an album called "Cosmogramma". This record was also quite well received and ended up winning an Independent Music Award for "Dance/Electronica Album". This was a huge deal for he is one of the few artists who have managed to crack the pop 100 without a major label to back him up.
Flying Lotus also composes the score of different film and television series soundtracks. In 2010, he was part of the "Ann Arbor Film Festival" where he performed the score of the movie "Heaven and Earth" from 1962. The film was an old school avant-garde production and Flying Lotus talked to the audience later about how he is interested in being part of similar experiences. However, whether a recording of the performance would be released or whether he would formally record a recreation of the soundtrack was still unknown. A public recording is yet to be released. Later on in the year, he performed at the "ATP Nightmare Before Christmas". He was picked by Battles to be part of this festival. He flew to England for this performance and has performed many other shows around the country as well. He has now released his new record here as well and is thus slowly gaining a worldwide audience. Flying Lotus tickets can be bought by his fans in the UK later on in the season.
His winning streak as an independent artist has not stopped. In 2011, he was the recipient of yet another Independent Music Award in the category of "Short Form Video" for his single "MmmHmm". After his win, he announced that he was to collaborate with Miwa Matreyek for a multimedia project. The potential film was going to be called "The Mapping of Countries Yet to Come".
Today, Flying Lotus continues to work as a producer along with being a performer. His latest works including producing Mac Miller’s new album, "Watching Movies with the Sound Off". His work in television has also not stopped. He provided the music for the cartoon series "Adventure Time". The songs he composed were called "About that Time" and "A Glitch is a Glitch". In addition to this work, he has his new career as a rapper to embark onto and a brand new radio channel on the "Grand Theft Auto" games.
