About Same Time Next Year

The story begins one fateful February night in the year 1951 in Northern California when these two protagonists happen to check in to the same inn. What starts off as a chance eye contact quickly develops into intimate talks and passion culminating into an affair. Thus begins the decade spanning love affair between the two who are both married at the time and have a combined number of six kids from their marriages. In a unique twist to the average married-love affair infidelity story, these two make a pact to keep meeting once a year on the same day and the same place every year. And this goes on for the next twenty five years of their lives.

Same Time Next Year is at its core, a simple play about the changing relationships of a couple who are friends and also share an intimate bond. And yet, due to their unique relationship status, they can be objective about the problems in each other’s lives. It is the story of how the world is changing around them and how it is also changing them and their perceptions about things. We are made witness to the internal changes in the characters personalities as they give relationship advice to each other. There are deaths, births as well as other things that happen during the life of an average person. Only here they are accompanied by the romance and intimacy of two people seeing each other after a year of separation each time, so the catching up bit is very endearing.

Gene Saks was the producer of the play. It opened on Broadway at The Brooks Atkinson Theatre on 14th of March, 1975 after only four previews.
