Columbus Symphony Orchestra
Starting out as ‘Columbus Little Symphony’ in the early fifties, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra was formed by the Women’s Association of the “Columbus Philharmonic” as it was shut down due to financial difficulties in 1949. It was the tireless effort of these courageous women which saved Symphony Orchestra in Columbus. The name was later changed to its current form in 1955 and interestingly, up till 1961 it was these women who were exclusively governing the orchestra. Now the orchestra is played in the Ohio Theatre, which has been its abode since the seventies.
Claude Monteux was the first music director of the orchestra, who was a conductor and flutist while Evan Whallon led the orchestra the longest; a total of twenty six years, from 1956 to 1982. His various contributions include the move of the orchestra from its previous venue to Ohio Theatre in 1970, thus saving the iconic theater building from getting demolished as it was thought to be in a state of disrepair at the time. It was during his time also that opera productions by the name of “Columbus Symphony Opera” and a professional dance company, “BalletMet” were added to the profile of the orchestra.
Currently, Jean-Marie Zeitouni is the music director of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, who has served with many prestigious orchestras in different capacities and holds three master’s degrees in conducting, percussion, and theory from the Montreal Conservatory. The orchestra runs mammoth dimensions, employing over fifty full time musicians and about 130 volunteer singers join to form the chorus.
The Columbus Symphony Orchestra puts out a wide array of orchestra music. From the golden ‘classics’ to the more relevant popular music and show tunes; ‘pops’, it has something for everyone. The orchestra also plays a pops series in the summers by the name of "Picnic with the Pops" at a local venue, where friends and families come together to dine and enjoy the music, a hit with the community for the last quarter of a century.
With other community outreach programs to its credit, The Columbus Symphony Orchestra has also taken it upon itself to educate the young musicians. “Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestra” which functions under the music director Peter Stafford Wilson, has four wings depending on how old the youngsters are. Ranging from grade three kids up to twelfth graders, the purpose is to give the young an opportunity to play in professional settings with skilled conductors.
