Different historians cite different time periods when it comes to the origin of golf. There are however no ambiguities when it comes to tracing the origins of the sport as we see it today. It was in Scotland that modern golf was conceived way back in 1457. History books show "Musselburgh Links" as being the most historic golf course where the first round of golf took place on 2nd March, 1672.
It was in 1744 that the "Company of Gentlemen Golfers" came up with rules for the sport. The document is considered to be the oldest recorded catalogue of golf stipulations. The game started to expand to new territories and by the late 1880's the sport had expanded to South Africa, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. It was during that time period when the sport began to establish a strong foothold in the U.S. as well. The country had two hundred and sixty seven clubs by 1910.
The popularity of the sport played a big part in its evolution. Golf courses improved and the format changed as well. Normally a golf round is played over eighteen holes. There are nine holes courses as well. There are now four major tournaments played by men which are also called the "Majors." The season begins with the "Masters Tournament" in April. That is followed by the "U.S. Open Championship" in June and "The Open Championship" the next month. The last one is the "PGA Championship" which is held in the month of August every year. The legendary "Jack Nicklaus" won eighteen majors which puts him in the first place on the list.
The women's side of golf's first major of the year is the Kraft Nabisco Championship which is held in March-April. Then there are the LPGA Championship, the U.S. Women's Open and the Women's British Open. The "Evian Championship" became the fifth major in 2013. Players that are over fifty years of age have their own "Senior Majors." "The Senior PGA Championship," "The Tradition," "Senior Players Championship," "U.S. Senior Open" and "The Senior Open Championship." "Patty Berg" holds the record for the most women's major titles with fifteen to her name.
The soaring popularity has seen the prize money swell well into millions. The game is now broadcasted to hundreds of countries by some of the biggest sports broadcasters in the world which has now turned golf into one of the most watched sports in the world.
