Shot in Paris, the film revolves around the life of a young widow Regina Lampert played by Hepburn. While vacationing at a Ski Resort with a friend, Regina begins flirting with a stranger, Peter Joshua played by Grant. Joshua comes to France from America and land up at t the same resort as where Reggie is staying. Joshua wins over Reggie’s heart and becomes her soul mate. While they are falling in love they both end up in a wired chase. A group of villains lead by Kennedy (a heavy weight thug); Glass (a real bad guy); and Coburn, who enter the plot and follow the two till the end. They keep coming after them to claim the money stolen by her ex-husband, Charles; a huge sum of $250,000.

Everything from the murder of her husband to the striking fortune opens up a Pandora box. Reggie is devastated on knowing the reality of her husband’s secret life. She had to give up everything from her accommodation to her designer clothes and land into the arms of Joshua who becomes her only hope. From the start to the end, the wild chase and the defense keeps the screenplay very interesting. The scintillating plot keeps everyone hooked to the twists and turns coming up every now and then.

Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant in their respective roles come out as a beautiful couple. They have not just justified their character but also look amazing. Hepburn’s wonderful Givenchy wardrobe is to die for. Grant’s and Hepburn’s age difference is a very obvious one, however, it has been used cleverly to make the film even more interesting. Grant’s acting and role is that of an older man who is warm and comforting. He is completely winning as he finds himself helpless in front of the beauty and advances of Reggie; at the same time goes out of the way to protect her. Reggie’s advances and Joshua’s physical efforts to save the damsel in distress brings out a quirky playful romance on the screen. The dialogues are super witty and Paris in the background is simply irresistible. With these stars romping around in this beautiful city, you might want to join them there and then. Charade is compared by critics to Alfred Hitchcock’s thrillers. Hitchcock’s work is generally intense but the easy going feel the plot of this film can be compared to his work. Donen also makes an appearance like Hitchcock, in a small part of a businessman using an elevator. Donen has been known for his musicals in Hollywood and this film carries the rhythm of a musical. Its flow and sequence of acts is very smooth. Even moments like action sequences and romance between Grant and Hepburn is natural and fun. The dialogues are also loaded with good humor, a take here and there. The actors are seen tossing lines cleverly making every moment of the film magical.

Charade is Stanley Donen’s entertaining piece of work. It presents two greatest actors in roles that brought the best out of them. This classic film is worthwhile watch and should be enjoyed in the theater rather than on the couch in front of the television or your computer.
