Based on the lyrics and books by "Langston Hughes", the play was initially showcased Off Broadway in 1961. The cast comprised more than hundred and fifty singers belonging to various age groups. The show was one of the first Off Broadway plays written by an African American. Langston also provided the music of the play. Born in 1902, Langston achieved tremendous success as a columnist, playwright, novelist, social activist and poet. Some of his best works were presented during the Harlem Renaissance. Langston is regarded as one of the pioneers of jazz poetry. Throughout his career, he received numerous honors and accolades. In 1963, Langston received an honorary doctorate degree by 'Howard University'. The following year he was awarded an honorary Litt.D by 'Western Reserve University'. He also won the "Anisfield Wolf Book Award" as well as "Witter Bynner Undergraduate Poetry Prize". In 2002, Langston was enlisted as "100 Greatest African Americans" by "Molefi Kete Asante". With a poetry collection comprising works such as "The Panther and the Lash: Poems of Our Times", "One Way Ticket", "Freedom's Plow", "Shakespeare in Harlem", "The Dream Keeper and Other Poems", "Dear Lovely Death" and "Fine Clothes to the Jew", Langston managed to earn critical as well as commercial success. Some of his major plays include "Jericho Jim Crow", "Simple Heavenly", "Tambourines to Glory", "Don't You Want To Be Free?", "Emperor of Haiti", "Little Ham", "Troubled Island", "Mulatto" and "Mule Bone".
The play has also been staged every year in Seattle for the past thirteen years beginning in 1998. The Seattle production began showcasing the show at the 'Intiman Theater'. Although a smaller production as compared to the original one, it has gained immense success and fame over the years. Choreographed by "Donald Byrd" and directed by "Jackie Moscou", the production now plays at the 'Moore Theater'. The world premiere of the musical has also been documented and released in 2004. The film captures the mesmerizing journey of the original cast members and music director "Aaron Robinson", as they bring the epic story of Jesus Christ on stage. The Boston production of the show continues to be showcased every Christmas by the National Center of Afro-American Artists. Founded in 1968, the NCAAA has been a front-runner in preserving and spreading the cultural arts heritage of African Americans throughout the globe. One of the largest colored cultural arts organizations in the country, the NCAAA has significantly contributed to the African American culture by collaborating with several production houses and producing various shows every year.
