The American ice hockey team, Lake Eerie Monsters is all set for another amazing season. They started playing for the American Hockey League in 2007 and represent the city of Cleveland, Ohio. They are the top minors, affiliated with the National Hockey League’s team Colorado Avalanche. The team started playing their first season at the Quicken Loans Arena.
The arena is known for its multipurpose nature featuring various concerts and sporting events throughout the year. Apart from the Lake Erie Monsters, some of the residing teams of the arena include the Cleveland Cavaliers playing for the NBA, Cleveland Gladiators for AFL and Cleveland Crush for LFL. In the past teams like Cleveland Rockers (WNBA), Cleveland Lumberjacks (IHL) and Cleveland Barons (AHL) have also been playing in this arena as their home. The arena also hosts basketball tournaments for MAC men and women. It has the capacity of over twenty thousand sports fans and has been functional since 1994. Some of the most memorable events held in this arena include NBA All Star games, NCAA tournaments and Figure Skating Championships.
The team currently plays for the Western Conference in the Northern Division. It is currently owned by Dan Gilbert and managed by David Oliver. Their head-coach is David Quinn, who was the defenseman for Cleveland Lumberjacks and Binghamton Rangers in the past. The current roster of the team includes Julien Brouillette, Joel Chouinard, Joel Chouinard, Matt Generous, David Liffiton, Ray Macias, Louis Liotti and Kevin Montgomery in the defending line. Their attack is pretty strong with players like Patrick Bordeleau, Zach Cohen and Zach Cohen in the left wing and Matt Ford, Harrison Reed, David Van Der Gulik and Luke Walker in the right wing. Chad Costello plays in the forward position and the center position is held by Mike Carman, Justin Mercier, Julian Talbot and Ben Walter. The Goalies are Jason Bacashihua and John Grahame.
The Lake Erie Monsters started only a couple of years ago, before that this franchise played as Utah Grizzlies. The Lake Erie Monsters were brought in to Ice Hockey as a revival of Utah Grizzlies owned by Dan Gilbert. The franchise folded in 2005 from Utah and moved to Cleveland as a replacement for Cleveland Barons who became Worcester Sharks. It played for American Hockey League in 2001 and was also listed in the International Hockey League. The Franchise was known as Denver Grizzlies before 1995 and played at Denver for a year before they moved to Utah.
The name of the franchise is also well thought out referring the local legend of Bessie. Bessie is originally a lake monster, which was reported for the first time in 1917 and since then has been the famous folklore that people living near Lake Erie love to share. The name was announced by the owner Gilbert on Jan, 2007. The name was decided after months of research and discussions among the people of Cleveland. Once the name was taken care of the next step was the logo and just like the name it was emphasized that the logo does show a connection with the region. The logo thus was decided to have a connection with Lake Erie as well. The team colors are decided to be Yellow, Wine, Blue, Black and White. The first ever coach for the team was decided to be Joe Sacco. He has been playing professionally in the National Hockey League and has been associated with the Colorado Avalanche for years. He was joined by the assistant coach Sylvain Lefebvre who was one of the legendary defensemen for Avalanche’s.
