About Ragtime

After achieving success at the world premiere in Toronto, Ragtime finally made its Broadway debut in 1998.  The amazing team of director, Frank Galati together with choreographer, Graciela Daniele, received a lot of appreciation for their tireless efforts. The very next year, Ragtime went on a US tour which successfully came to an end after giving almost 834 performances in major venues. Right after its two year tenure of multiple productions, Ragtime took away five Drama Desk Awards and four Tony Awards for various categories including “Best Orchestrations,” “Outstanding Music” and “Best Book of a Musical”.Each song in Ragtime tells a story and has an amazing lyrical approach. The lyrical quality also won it a Drama Desk Award for “Best Lyrics.” The musical has gained immense popularity for many of its songs such as “Journey On,” “Atlantic City,” “What Kind of Woman” and “Harry Houdini, Master Escapist.”

In a span of two years, Ragtime created a noticeable hype in the theater world which took the musical to its European premiere at the Cardiff International Festival of Musical Theater. The event was also broadcasted on the well-known channel BBC Four. Right after the completion of the Europe trip, Ragtime prepped up for its West End production in London’s Piccadilly Theater. The musical starred the popular English actress Maria Friedman for the role of mother. She won an Oliver Award for “Best Actress in a Musical.” After a long break, Ragtime came back with a bang in 2009 at the world famous venue, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The same year, Ragtime made a Broadway comeback at the Neil Simon Theater with direction and choreography by a multi award winning theater personality, Marcia Milgrom Dodge. The musical ran for over 35 performances and received multiple Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations also winning a Drama Desk Award for “Outstanding Sound Design.”

Ragtime has received the most appreciation for its orchestrations. William David Brohn along with his team of 26 musicians has helped the musical reach a whole new level. The orchestra consists of a variety of instruments ranging from banjos, trombones and harps to keyboards, guitars and percussions.  The main element of any musical is its music and Ragtime has managed to take leave a mark when it comes to instrumentation. Once you start watching the show it completely occupies you. The perfect blend of amazing light design, costumes and stage settings along with the music, makes Ragtime a must see. In 2012, the show was made part of the Shaw Festival where it played successful shows for several months. The same year Ragtime had its London revival at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theater.
