About Nice Work If You Can Get It

Nice Work If You Can Get It was produced for the first time in 2001, when it was originally titled They All Laughed! at Connecticut’s Goodspeed Opera House, where it was directed by Christopher Ashley with its book written by Joe DiPietro. According to Frank Rizzo from the Hartford Courant, this initial production received a mixed response, prompting the involvement of new producers and collaborators. A workshop was then held in late 2007, featuring the American actress Erin Dilly, best known for her work in a 2005 musical called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and American singer/actor Harry Connick Jr.  By then the musical’s title had been changed to Heaven on Earth and it was scheduled to premiere in December 2008 at Colonial Theatre located in Boston, where it was to run through the whole of the following January. The production, which was earlier expected to be staged on Broadway in the spring of 2009, announced that Connick would be starring as the Long Island Playboy. The scenic design was then under the management of Derek McLane, while the lighting design was under Kenneth Posner. Rob Fisher was to be the music arranger and supervisor, and costume designing was under Martin Pakledinaz.
By mid 2008, the original producing team of Nice Work If You Can Get It had disbanded, so that the musical had now been taken up by Broadway Across America, due to which the musical was postponed.  In 2009, in an interview on MSNBC’s The Today Show, Connick announced that the Broadway production was now underway under director George Wolfe.  Then in 2010, it was again announced though Playbill magazine that Connick had quitted the project over conflict with Kathleen Marshall. Owing to such reasons the musical’s production experienced much delay.
By October 2008, a new reading took place, now starring Sutton Foster and Matthew Broderick with Scott Landis as the producer and Kathleen Marshal as the director. The previews of Nice Work If You Can Get It then began at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway in March 2012, with the official opening of the show scheduled for the following April. With additional cast members Judy Kaye playing Estonia Dulworth, Michael McGrath portraying Cookie McGee, Terry Beaver playing Senator  Max Evergreen, and Jennifer Laura Thompson playing Eileen Evergreen, the musical finally came to debut. Further additional cast included Stanley Wayne Mathis, Chris Sullivan and Estelle Parsons.
Nice Work If You Can Get It revolves around the character of Jimmy Winter, a rich playboy on his way to getting married the third time, when he comes across the beautiful Billie and the two fall in love. Jimmy joins her in bootlegging activities that she has been long involved in, and hides the alcohol in his Long Island mansion. It is then that his current fiancé, Billie’s friends and others find themselves caught up in the same ventures when they discover that the Vice Squad chasing after them.
