Based on Hilary Mantel’s bestselling novels, “Wolf Hall” and “Bring Up the Bodies”, Wolf Hall: Parts 1 & 2 is ready for its second run at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York. Earlier the play enjoyed a successful engagement in 2014 and the critics praised it for being a gripping piece of narrative theatre. A historical drama of the highest caliber, Wolf Hall takes the audience to the court of Henry VIII. Mike Poulton has beautifully adapted the story for stage and has used minimal props on the set so that the audience is not distracted from the powerful story. The dramatization of two stories is presented brilliantly by a talented cast and costume and scenic designer, Christopher Oram has properly attired the actors in period costumes.

Wolf Hall is the story of Thomas Cromwell, who was the chief minister to King Henry. Rising from humble beginnings, he went on to become the ear of the king. In history, his character has always been a Machiavellian one. He has always been presented as an ingenious royal fixer, a cunning man who pulled the strings of the Tudor administration for his own gain. In Hilary Mantel's books, a fictionalized take has been given to Cromwell’s character. Acclaimed actor Ben Wiles plays Thomas Cromwell in the play and in Wolf Hall Part 1, he navigates life in Tudor court. A lawyer and master politician, his courtly intrigue helped him rise in ranks. He was initially Cardinal Wolsey’s right-hand man and ended up sidestepping him for his personal agenda. He landed at the very heart of power, becoming an adviser to Henry VIII and eventually changing the course of British history forever.

In Wolf Hall Part 2, the story moves forward as Cromwell becomes an antihero. Through plotting and scheming, he replaces his mentor Wolsley in ranks and rises to great height at the Tudor court. When King Henry’s wife Katherine of Aragon in unable to give him a male heir, Cromwell orchestrates their divorce and helps him marry his mistress, Anne Boleyn. By doing this, Cromwell gets the king expelled from the Catholic Church in Rome and he’s also isolated from the other European states. With Anne Boleyn as the new Queen, all eyes are on her to give the king a male heir for his lineage. When she also fails, the king sets his eye on another suitor, Jane Seymour. However, it was too late for Cromwell as the court was getting suspicious about him and in order to survive, he joins forces with the king’s enemies.
