World’s best artists in the south of Virginia! Seems too good to be true! Well than come down folks, and see it for yourselves. It’s the annual international arts festival better known as Virginia Arts Festival. Here, you would not only revisit the glorious past of colonial America but also get to see the bright future of music, dance, and theatre, invited from all over the world especially for you!
Created by the city of Norfolk, Virginia, the Festival started in 1997 and is an annual spring festival, taking place in South Virginia. Communities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach and the historical Williamsburg, play host to this Festival. The organizers of the Festival have two-pronged strategy; to entertain and educate. It’s a non-profit event, run primarily by donations and grants. Some of its corporate sponsors are the American Airlines, the Bank of America, the Norfolk Southern and the Suntrust.
In addition to bringing world class musicians from all over the world, one of the main reasons behind starting such a festival was to culturally educate the region. Apart from inviting artists, the Festival also sponsors Virginia Arts Festival WorldClass Education Program, Rhythm Project and the John Duffy Composers Institute, for the greater understanding and appreciation of the artists’ work.
By sponsoring the Virginia Arts Festival WorldClass Education Program, the Festival helps the local school students to culturally and musically enrich themselves by the works of world reknown artists. The Festival also sponsors the Rhythm Project. The Project is meant for, once again, the local school students of Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach areas, of grades fourth to twelfth. Another noble project being sponsored by the Festival is John Duffy Composers Institute. The Institute is all about sharpening the musical talents of young composers. These budding composers get to have there work checked by professionals like Libby Larsen, Fred Ho, Ricky Ian Gordon and Mark Campbell, thus getting valuable feedback, further enriching there musical talents and experiences.
Although the Virginia Arts Festival mainly attracts patrons from local areas, due to its ever increasing success, 25 percent of the visitors come from far flung states like Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Northern Virginia. Visitors from Canada attend this Festival as well, both due to its entertaining value and the beautiful Virginia Beach.
Since it’s a Festival comprising of music, dance and theatre, different venues like the concert halls, opera house, the beautiful and historic churches, a temple and an arena are used for performances. The schedule of the events is so masterfully done that the visitors do not have to choose one great performance over the other or run between two different venues. Although major performances are scheduled around each weekend, which is not to suggest that weekdays are any less busy.
Previously, events and artists like Ruth Brown, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Reduced Shakespeare Company, Virginia International Tattoo, Virginia Annual Beer Festival, James Moody, the Russian National Ballet, Liza Minnelli, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Anoushka Shankar, and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and others have performed at the Virgnia Arts Festival . Over the years, if there is one event which has started to have cult like following is the Virginia International Tattoo. Essentially an exhibition of military bands, massed pipes drums, military drill teams, gymnasts, Scottish dancers and choirs, it is an experience which needs to be lived through, in order to be thoroughly enjoyed. The grandeur of the event could be gauged from the fact that it involves over 800 artists from all over the world. Visitors who have seen it say, you have to see it to believe it. Anne N. Phillips of Phillips Destination Management says "This year’s Tattoo performance was the most outstanding that I have ever attended." This event is said to be not just an event, but an experience, which needs to be seen to be believed.
By participating in this Festival, you will not only be entertaining yourselves, friends and family but also contributing to the enrichment of the local areas of South Virginia.
