To Kill A Mockingbird: A Harper Lee Classic

On July 11, 1960, the highly acclaimed American novelist Harper Lee released one of her famously successful novels, To Kill A Mockingbird. The book was met with astounding success and immediately became a global phenomenon, selling millions of copies across the world and being translated into more than forty languages. Considered a ‘Great American Novel,’ the book has also received rave reviews from some of the biggest publications, including The New Yorker and the Chicago Tribune. 

Due to the novel’s incredible popularity, Robert Mulligan decided to make a film out of it. The flick turned out to be an instant hit, winning three Academy Awards and being added to the National Film Registry in 1995. It also garnered three Golden Globe Awards and featured Gregory Peck as Atticus Fitch, John Megna as Charles Baker “Dill” Harris, Mary Badham as Scout, and Phillip Alford as Jem.

What is the Novel About?

The story of To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in Alabama and is set in the 1930s. It is narrated from the perspective of the young Jean Louis 'Scout' Finch, the daughter of Atticus Finch, a professional lawyer who is hired to defend Tom Robinson, who is wrongly accused of raping a woman. The story tells how Scout grows aware of the prejudice and hypocrisy present in the adult world.

To Kill A Mockingbird: A Stage Adaptation by Aaron Sorkin

In February 2016, it was announced that Aaron Sorkin would be making a theatrical adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird. He is a prominent playwright who has previously worked on highly entertaining plays such as The Farnsworth Invention and A Few Good Men. He has also worked on various television series and contributed his screenwriting skills to many popular Hollywood films, including Charlie Wilson's War, Steve Jobs, and Moneyball. He has earned many accolades, including an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on The Social Network.

Aaron Sorkin is now scheduled to debut his play on Broadway in the fall of 2018. This production will be directed by Tony and Drama Desk Award winner Bartlett Sher, known for directing plays such as "Don Juan," "Cymbeline," and "Pericles, Prince of Tyre." The show will be produced by Academy Award winner Scott Rudin, known for producing films such as "The Social Network," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "School of Rock," and "The Truman Show."

Celia Keenan-Bolger – Celia Keenan-Bolger, the Drama Desk Award winner for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play, will star in To Kill A Mockingbird as Scout. She is known for her roles in musicals such as Les Misérables, Saved, and Merrily We Roll Along.

Will Pullen – The star of popular films such as "Goat" and "The Americans," Will Pullen will also be a part of "To Kill a Mockingbird" as Jem..

Stark Sands – The two-time Tony nominated artist, Stark Sands will also join the cast of To Kill a Mockingbird as Horace Gilmer. He is widely known for playing the role of Tunny in the musical, ‘American Idiot.’
